If last weekend’s Boat Race or watching the success of the GB Rowing Team has whet your appetite for taking up rowing, with the longer days to make the most of and hopefully some warmer weather around the corner, now is a good time to have a go. With 10 rowing clubs within a 5 mile radius from our Tower Hill clinic and over 50 clubs within a 10 mile radius from central London there should be a local club close to home or your work place.
There are many benefits of rowing, with one of the main ones for improving fitness levels. Rowing is a total body workout, using all of the body’s major muscle groups making it a superb aerobic and resistance training conditioner. Rowing exercises muscles through a wider range of motion compared to other activities thereby promoting flexibility and mobility. Research has shown that rowing burns calories faster than biking at the same perceived level of exertion. So combined with healthy eating you can help shed those extra pounds you put on over Easter…
Rowing is great if you are interested in solo sports and just relaxing and training by yourself. Equally rowers who take part with others have to learn to be an integral part of that team and gain the benefits of doing a team sport. It is a great way to release the stresses of the day as well as enjoying the calming affect of being outdoors.
As a physiotherapist specialising in rehabilitation I often suggest rowing for injury recovery, as it a low impact form of exercise, providing the perfect cardiovascular and strength training. It is also a lifelong sport that can be performed and enjoyed at any age-so why not find your nearest rowing club and give it a go!
